I was really nervous at the thought of being the DJ for an artist's live set. There is a lot going on in the background besides playing the music like interacting with the artist and audience, and being on the mic at the right time, and understanding & speaking Japanese.

Deejaying for a live artist's performance looks exciting and Hip Hop DJs always look like they have a blast. I'm nowhere near being the Hip Hop DJ I want to be, but I look forward to doing more live events. It was a blessing to be able to work with Kojoe, who alone will be an artist to watch take over the globe in the next year. I was able to shine my Dai*Light behind his performance at Velours in Aoyama.

Kannonsama: Tall Buddha in Gunma

Takasaki is a large city in Gunma Prefecture (State), northwest of Tokyo. Looking across the city and towards the mountain line, you can't help but notice the tall, towering Buddha statute over looking the city. It is pretty scary, and even more so up close as you walk towards it and notice how massively tall it is in person. Japan still amazes me and this Byakui Dai Kannon is on my list of statues to visit in Japan! Come with me...

One of the many Buddhas inside of the Kannon that you can view while walking upwards inside the staute. This one is the gatekeeper of hell~scary dude. Most of them have fly outfits and are very colorful. I even seen one with the same gold toenails as myself.

Sunday, April 11, 2010 was a beautiful, clear, sunny Dai in Tokyo. My friend and House Music enthusiast, Mike took me to my first Nagisa event. There is another one being held in Autumn, and he has already blocked my schedule to attend.

We danced from 11am, moving DJ display to stages around the beautiful grounds in Odaiba. I was able to see my friend and House singer friend Jason perform, along with tons of our House DJ buddies.

Not to mention Michaela, a Gary, Indiana native, and super House supporter!

I definitely enjoyed myself and met many new people and contacts. I was happy to learn about the Brazilian party drink brand CATUMA. It is sweet, organic, and by the decor of the staffers- bold fun.

Fatness First: My Soda Collection

Some of the weird, tasty, and cute sodas I’ve come across in the grocery store includes:

Sparkling Strawberry (yummy)

Sparkling Chocolate (which would be great as a float)

Tabasco designed bottle with bright red soda (no it doesn’t taste like fruit punch, it tastes like regular Pepsi, but nasty)

Fanta’s “Hip Hop” soda that is brown and supposed to be fruit punch flavor. My inner Black culture censor is telling me not to even try it-boycott-but I had to. They failed-it tastes like peach soda more than anything.

(What else would Hip Hop taste like? But we all know fruit punch is red!)

Pink ginger ale in a “Sex in the City” wrapper (it was so cute I had to get it, I never even tried it)

Japanese “Soda”-not sure what they were aiming for but the bottle was brightly decorated with Mt. Fuji and it tasted like soda flavor-sweet blue is all I can call it.

Japan makes everything marketable to men and womens’ eyes regardless of how it tastes. I do wonder why they have thought certain flavors would be tasty, and put so much emphasis to dress up the bottle. It sure does make my trips to the nearest 7-11, Lawsons, Sunkus, or Family Mart an adventure!

Just in time for Valentine season, an ear stimulant that is sure to get all digital girls and boys in computer love. Don Ghotti of Felicitous Records presents Candyland Gothica: An Electronic Love Story. Taking an “808 & Heartbreaks” approach (minus the depression and abuse of Auto-Tunes), this album makes the electro-hop/techno sounds of relationships acceptable in a club atmosphere. The heavily synthed album has a pleasing arrangement of pulsating tracks, harmonious vocal dressings, and befitting lyrics throughout the theme. Don “Ghotti” Pitts was able to create a unique audible experience without being whisked in a cliché niche by letting the world know “It’s Felicitous Bitch!”

My First Night with Saddique and His Was the Longest

...NAAN I’ve ever seen! It seemed to be 1 foot or longer! The curry servings were small compared to other places I’ve been, but maybe that was the set I chose. I’m not complaining because I was struggling to finish it all. I ordered the 2 curry, 1 naan, rice, and mini salad set. The salad had a specially made, bright orange-colored, black peppered sprinkled dressing. It was thick like a French dressing and good, yet not over bearing as the color suggested. There was a big serving of yellow rice hidden under the long naan. I ordered butter chicken and lamb curry, one sweet and one spicy.

For ￥1,200 yen, the set was perfect. Usually menus make you choose rice or naan, but having both made sopping up my curry even more enjoyable. The lamb curry wasn’t too spicy and the lamb cuts were extra tender. I pushed myself to eat all of the curry and saved my morsels of chicken from drowning. I savored every bite. To accompany my meal, instead of the typical mango lassi, I opted for my favorite, sweet purple stuff-cassis. I thought I was just ordering a fruit lassi, but it turned out to be a cocktail with cassis liquor-やった! It was delicious and only 500. Needless to say, the itus had me before I reached Shinjuku station!

I had to get up close and personal with this one. I spotted this lemon wine cooler with 5% alcohol and 5% real lemon at a display in the grocery store. The man's face caught my attention. Then I couldn't believe when I got closer that they actually put a gold tooth on the bottle's label! Japan! (SIGH!)

Fatness First: My Lipton Tea Collection

Fatness First is nothing new with me, The President & Founder of the club. You can check previous entries about my new food, drink, and snack discoveries.

I was turned onto Lipton Milk Tea (in the blue carton) about 3 years ago. I never thought I would like it but I became hooked. Whenever I’m in a Japanese コンビニー I always check for the new seasonally released flavor of Lipton. Usually the teas are just fruit flavored, or au lait, or milk blends. The carton changes colors with the theme and special holiday decorations.

Here is a collection of the ones I have tried most recently.

The most recent flavor being chocolate.

Yuzu (lemon/lime) is also new.

I love bananas! So I must say anything banana released becomes my favorite!

Fatness First: The Exclusive Pepsi Collection

Because my grandmother loves Pepsi, I have made it a hobby to collect and mail her 2 bottles of the newest Pepsi flavors, only marketed in Japan. I first started with the release of:

Cucumber Pepsi: Taste-extra sweet fruity flavors-not a cucumber taste, Color-light marine green

Blue Hawaii Pepsi: Taste-lemon/pineapple-ish flavor, Color-aqua blue

White Yogurt: Taste-should have been a soft Calpis taste, but it tasted as hard and strong as regular Pepsi despite the color-cloudy white

Shiso Pepsi (Japanese word for Perilla "mint family" herb): Taste-like fresh ginger, Color-light green

~See my brother Josh’s pictures in the August 2009 archive when he came to visit-not a fan of Shiso. Actually noone was and they sat for months in crates and the price dropped to 88yen (80 cents) a bottle. It should have been 2 for $1!~

Azuki (Red bean): Taste-sweet and weird, Color-burgundy

My 1st Suicide Train

Japan really needs to get it together culturally, spiritually, etc. Not like the rest of the world is doing any better with or without Jesus or Buddha as their Master focus. I swear, this is such a detached nation mentally, emotionally, physically and spiritually. (Prime Examples: No physical contact with each other or signs of affection-unless a young couple holding hands, never smiling, no general communication with each other, no physical contact in photographs-only standing in groups holding peace signs, inability to express emotion even if in danger or harm, no peripheral vision or common sense of self and others in the surrounding. Yes, this is a generalization.)

After being a passenger on a train, riding in the first car that not only ran over the person, and we heard and felt rumble under our feet from the train floor, but also witnessed the remains being retrieved as we had to exit a half an hour later; I was pretty upset!

I made it to work an hour late, followed by another teacher who was on the same train in another car. On our way to a class together we were discussing why she was late, and I told her I was in car 1 and that the whole situation messed me up. We proceeded to the classroom where she tells the 1st year Jr. high school students what happened, in Japanese, with no emotion and no empathy. It was as if some cool but weird thing happened and nothing more. Like a human loosing their life really had no value to their society.

Japan has one of the highest suicide rates in the world. Being that families are paid life insurance money regardless of cause of death, is one reason people commit suicide so often. We may think of suicide as selfish and having whatever religious consequences we believe, but out here it is a sacrificial decision to take care of the family finances. Recently, train lines have been suing families for the problems caused by a person killing themselves on their tracks, in order to reduce suicide by jumping in front of trains. It is common to see updates that a train line is delayed due to "human accident," as it translates. With 12 million people in Tokyo, and double that amount during commute hours, train suicides are highly inconvenient.

We joke about train jumpers all of the time, although it isn't funny, but it is viewed as a nuisance more than anything because Japanese are so used to it. It is one thing to be desensitized to a situation, but when it happens and you see it, and you speak about it like it doesn't matter, you are dehumanized. As much as people kill each other at home and we get desensitized to the news of it, we can't not relate to the fact that someone has died, and the greater effect it has on the community, no matter what. We don't retell the story like some casual, careless roadkill situation.

Im in the 1st train car. Nice sleep, just woke up a lil to reposition myself. the train pulls off, we get a nice speed,then all of a sudden, sounds like a big toy car or electric iron was thrown on the track.something loud rumbles under the train like its trailing down, can feel it under our feet. the lights flicker on and off.

thought i was going to die but the train slowed to a stop.

My 1 Year Anniversary @ Dr. Sketchy's Tokyo

I was never good at art or drawing and I wasn't familiar with Burlesque entertainment. Last year, when Lady Elle, the host and organizer of Dr. Sketchy's Anti-Art School in Tokyo put a post out for a DJ needed at her monthly event, I thought it would be fun to practice my new hobby at something as interesting as a burlesque art event.

Every month the colorful cast hosts an event The Pink Cow in Shibuya, which features a Burlesque model or performer who struts, dances, and poses for the audience during 3 acts of fun contests, music, and sketch challenges.

This September marked my 1 year anniversary as Dr. Sketchy Tokyo's Anti-Art School's resident DJ. I made a special mix CD, The Best of Burlesque Act 1 for those sketch monkey's starting a one year membership.

Fatness First: Product Alert!

Thank you Japan for paying attention to details. This is why I need to stay out of the ¥100 ($1) store! I found this cute pack of erasers shaped like cup-o-noodles and ramen bowls. I just started using it not too long ago (Yes, I still use pencils and notebooks-I'm a jotting brainstormer). I noticed something rattling around inside but didn't pay attention to it at first. So finally I said, let me see if I can pry back this lid on the top and there better not be noodles in it. Sure enough, they put a little noodle shaped eraser inside the bowl shaped eraser. I opened the other one to double check that also!

My 1st Red Carpet: G.I. Joe Japan Premier

I had the opportunity to attend the Japan premier and red carpet of G. I. Joe. I didn’t know what to expect because I forgot what the theme of the cartoon was besides an army, and I remember the action figures. I watched trailers and interviews but I wasn’t sure what to expect from Marlon Wayans. I would have cast Tyrese in the role by default. He seems to always play in films like these.

G.I. Joe premiered the same day as the release in the USA. I got to watch the screener and interview cast on the red carpet at Tokyo’s LaLaPort. I first spoke with Sienna Miller who played Baroness. She was very pleasant. I forgot to ask her about filming in that leather outfit. I definitely want to be her for Halloween! Then the producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura spoke with me. He was so kind and just seemed like a jolly man without Christmas! I was there to film for FOX Backstage Pass and Access E Online. On the carpet, we were flagged to only speak with those two, but after Marlon Wayans passed the first Japanese interviewer and spotted me he said, “Hey! You’re not Asian”! We began talking, and he is definitely a ball of energy and comedy. I laughed the whole time he went down the carpet messing with the other interviewers. I’m definitely looking forward to the next “White Chicks” movie. That had my Grandmom and I rolling! Channing Tatum is fine on and off screen and Rachael Nichols is tall and gorgeous in person. Byung-hun Lee gets all the love in Asia! Now that is a handsome dude!

I was pleasantly surprised by the movie. I expected the action, great CG and fighting. There was non-stop action though and my eyeballs were hurting. I wanted to blink but couldn’t. I thought the movie was funny and kept jokes coming. Marlon did a great job because he wasn’t playing a serious role I had predicted, but was able to be mildly comical and not overdo it. I thought the story flowed well and I look forward to the sequels.

I've been blessed to have 3 of my family members visit me in the past year. My dad came last August, my grandmother came during cherry blossom season, and my little brother came for summertime. He starts college this year and I had to make sure he enjoyed his time in Tokyo. I think it ruined him really. I don't know how you go back to life in the U.S. after experiencing this as a young man!

Friday morning, I awoke at 6:30 am and turned on Wendy Williams online and heard The King of Pop was rushed to the hospital. I just knew he was going to be fine. He is Michael Jackson! As we were commuting to work here in the Far East, news of Michael Jackson's death spread through text messages. I couldn't believe it and I sat at my desk dumbfounded all morning. I told my junior high school students that Michael Jackson had passed away, and after they translated what I said from English to Japanese, they gasped and said "What!? Really!" I told them to watch the news and read newspapers. The following week consisted of singing Michael Jackson songs and watching "Thriller" and them learning that Michael Jackson was Black and actually had brown skin and an afro when he was younger. Many of the students grew up on the white skinned Michael Jackson and had no idea. I was happy that the teachers I work with wanted to pass on the legacy of Micheal Jackson, many of which bought in their own CDs and talked about how they enjoyed his music.

The foreign community celebrated his life all weekend. I immediately called for a visit to karaoke singing only Michael Jackson tunes, so friends and I got together to sing and dance. Then we spent the weekend attending clubs and DJ sets of M.J. only.

I am still in disbelief but I know he will live forever. He definitely was the only person in the entire world to bring everyone together of all ages, races, and cultures through his entertaining and music alone. I really hope another Michael Jackson star arises in another generation, even if I don't live to see it.

Rest in more peace than you had on this earth Mike. I hope you find your childhood...

In "The GHETTO"

I went to "The Ghetto" with my friends todai. It was weird to roll up on a building that looked like this, in Shin Okubo, "Korea Town," next to Shinjuku. I didn't know what to expect. I thought it was a biker gang hangout, like in "The Golden Child."

It turned out to be a restaurant & bar-Hells Kitchen, art gallery, shops, and Hip Hop/skater hangout.

This is a cool, Hip Hop, skate haven, with a real ramp built inside one of the rooms, and some of the oldest Hip Hop memorabilia all over the place. "Wild Style," and Fat Boys videos were playing on VHS and projector screens. There was graffiti DJs were free to get up and spin on the tables as the wished.

Upstairs held a small art gallery-HYAKU, and a children's skateboard clothing store-FLAKE, along with a section of throwback figurines and toys.

B-Girl and DJ, Sarasa led us into "The Ghetto" and I can't wait to go back for some live graff, breakin', skating, and Hip Hop!

Fried Chicken Wrapped in FOIL-CHECK!

Somebody must have lived in the hood for this one. I have never seen fried chicken sold wrapped in plastic and wax paper, with crispy fried outside, served with potato wedges, and grape drink outside of the corner spots or the Amish stands at the market. It is called "BBQ" Chicken & Cafe but it should just be called Fried Chicken & Sauces. I didn't even bother to see any BBQ sauce options. It served 2 piece combos or additional chicken pieces (over priced) with the option of hot sauce (sort of a Texas Pete flavor or thai sweet chili sauce). Japanese have got this one right. It is all fried in olive oil too. They also offer a large selection of fried chicken sandwiches and chicken fingers.

It was delicious and did cause the itus immediately, which I tried to fight off but I ended up sleeping on my grandmothers shoulder on our bus ride back to Shibuya. Thanks to Mike for treating us to this one!

Technological Advances

Japan's electronic stores have nice offers if you're willing sign-up for certain services or make purchases. I decided to get reliable wireless for my laptops since I started grad school and I'm about to move and will spend crucial half hours on the trains where I can be doing work. Japan, surprisingly, isn't wired well at all. Wi-Fi locations are difficult to find making that built in wireless inaccessible. I went to purchase a wireless USB that uses cell phone service areas as Internet service. While in Yodobashi Camera, I kept an E-Mobile representative for an hour and a half to explain, completely in Japanese, how the device worked and the contract details. He then offered me a free PSP or new Nintendo DSi with my purchase of the wireless and service. It also came with a wireless router, and I could walk out of the store with all 3 items priced at ¥100 ($0.88). I asked what was the catch, and of course they want your soul for 2 years of service. Well I picked the black DSi (with the ashy matte outside like the MacBook-I can't stand that texture!) I'm not a big gammer but I figured I can play Japanese language games, Bust-a-Move, and Tetris of course!

I still can't believe the ¥100 purchase. I wonder, like Jay-Z's single I'm titling, "When The Money Goes and The Bills Stay", will I truly benefit from this recession and the low $0.88 USD to ¥100 rate?

Destination-Paris
I visited my Soror in Paris from December 20-24, 2008. I went to all of the tourist spots, went inside Louis's crib-The Palace, ate real crepes with real chocolate, had too much wine and cheese, smoked a Cuban cigar-which was nasty, ate official macaroons at THE Laduree, and realized French is really hard to speak and understand! The men are beautiful and they dress fly.

Destination-Brussels
We took a train to Brussels on Christmas Eve to visit Cherie's friend Anne. Her family let us eat Christmas dinner with them. The family is beautiful and it was fun speaking FrEnglish with the kids. I ate official Belgium Waffles and Chocolate. I'm sorry Hershey, but I don't know what American chocolate companies are doing! Too much water I guess? One thing that bugged me to death was the amount of horrible graffiti all over. From Paris along the train tracks all the way into Brussels, the tagging was ridiculous. You will see how they ruined the city's beauty by making a mess all over. If you are going to do it, do it right! Brussels is really chill, more so than Paris. The tourist spots were nice to see, but that Pissing Boy Statue was weird. I'm glad I was able to use the 4 French words I picked up in Paris. Everyone speaks French!

Destination-London
We went to London from December 27-January 1st! We had to bring in the New Year right! We flew from Belgium to London. By that time we had caught a cold, but was determined to go to the club. We had a great time with the party people and got up with our new friends again for New Years Eve. London is super diverse and the speak English-yes. But also many people spoke Arabic. I'm determined to raise my kids in Europe until they know 3 languages then we can move. Shopping in London was crazy and I even caught Harrod's huge sale. I must go back there when it is warm to go sightseeing, to go to more clubs, shop (as long as the pound stays down), and meet more beautiful people! They need to do something about that heavy, old money! Pences suck to carry around! We seen all of the famous landmarks, and I loved our tourguide who was from Chicago-hilarious go figure! I visited the Tate Modern Museum which is huge and excellent. I wish I had more time in there, definitely hit that up if you go.

Destination-Amsterdam
XXX Ain't Neva Lie! I will be going back when it is warm and I can enjoy the flowers and more museums...I'm not going to tell you anymore so don't ask about it! Just know everything is true! The coffeeshops, the girls in the windows, the legal greens, etc. And you think Vegas is the spot-NOT!

Thank you Cherie! You were the best tour guide ever! I can't wait to travel with you again! I love you everyDAI!

Everybody N.O.S.E. I Love N.E.R.D.!

I've been waiting for N.E.R.D. to come back to Tokyo since Spring Groove back in April! This was the 3rd Anniversary of Pharrell's BBC/Ice Cream Store in Harajuku. N.E.R.D performed at Zepp Tokyo and you know I had to be there stage side to sing along with Pharrell and Shae!(Chad we would like to see you sometime-Thanks) Teriyaki Boyz and DJ NIGO opened. Famlay joined N.E.R.D on stage occasionally.

Jumpin around with the crazy Japanese fans-pushin them out the way, screaming all of the words to the songs, and making sure N.E.R.D. knows I love them, had my hair all sweated out, but mission accomplished!

Time of my life, being able to get on stage and rock out to "Everybody N.O.S.E." and "She Wants To Move", then meeting Pharrell backstage!

Cold Chillin on Froze!

I hate wintertime, but I wanted to experience the Absolute Icebar. It helps that it was hot and humid as summer outside.

¥3,500 admission for 45 minutes
Includes warm cape rental, gloves, and one drink in your own ice glass.

The interior was beautiful, and it smelled so crisp. There was a really good smell in there and the bartender said it was the juice. The ice glass was neat, and it made me want some Kool-Aid! The drink was good too. The ice for the entire bar was transported from Sweden. The bartender says they keep about 2,000 glasses frozen in stock.

This was worth the experience. But for that price I could go to an amusement park and not freeze my butt off. We ended up leaving after 20 minutes. I may pay it another visit if I ever get injured and need some ice.

I have always loved music and wanted to work in radio. I've been a DJ in my head and on the dance floor, but wouldn't have actually made the leap to try to do it without living here in Japan. The DJ capital country. All the equipment, venues, and opportunities you need!

At this moment, I actually have no idea what I'm doing, except playing the music I like. If it weren't for all of my DJ friends around me to guide my purchases on equipment and help me out in anyway I need, I'd really be lost. Thank you DJ Herk and Jason for always being one instant message away on info about Serato and Macs.

DJ C. Geez, who is my vinyl sensei and anti-Serato only, nicknamed me DJ S-Mix last year for only having a Serato and mixer for the longest, until I moved and he helped me find my 12s! Arigato, the headaches shall begin:) WAX ON, WAX OFF! Literally.

My friend Monique, party organizer, was looking for a female DJ for her girly "Pretty in Pink" party this summer. I told her I have my equipment but I'm not ready to do a party. She told me there will be other DJs, and I'd be fine in a month, just get the music together. So I gathered my selection on the Serato and figured out how to work it. Of course my main concern besides Hip Hop and the girly commercial Rap&B for the party, was to play my favorite club genre, Baltimore Club music. It just so happened that the Baltimore Club Queen DJ K-Swift passed away just weeks before my 1st party. I was so hurt, and hope to be a piece of the Club DJ that she was, R.I.P.

I was trying to think of a name, not any of my tons of nicknames I already had, but something else. I always use the D.A.I. in my name "day", hence DaiTime. I spoke to my dad to come up with some more. I'm in Japan, and starting my career here so what better than being in Japan, "The Land of the Rising Sun", then to be DJ Dai*Ligh t. It all blends with my theme of of the "Dai", and shining light.

The Pretty in Pink party was my first ever DJ experience, no cuttin/skratchin, just making sure the music comes out right and blends. I was so nervous, but with all of my friends and Sorors there, and other DJs varying their music and style, it was so much fun. Shout out to all those who were there from BMore! Thank you for rockin off with me BJ!

The party was fun and the guavaberry liquor was delicious too! Besides that fact that I had to wear my #1 least favorite color-Pink, I had a ball! Looking forward to the next one.

DaiTime Osaka-Fatness First (All You Can Eat)

I never knew love like this! I never knew! I am a banana lover of all things flavored after the wonderful fruit. When I stopped at the "Dig Me Out" Diner and browsed the menu for dessert and came across the "Hot Banana Cake" I couldn't resist. This made me speechless...I can only recommend go eat it yourself! Spongy, warm, goodness!

JAPANESE
This restaurant was near my hostel, and I happened to wander in on a hungry evening. The wood interior was nice, but I really marveled over the upstairs and how the floor was made of pebbles, and slabs of rocks, that also led into the bathroom and covered the ground. My selection of Tempura was set off when it was garnished with black pebbles.
The variety of seafood and miscellaneous deep fried items were delicious. You aways know a good restaurant by the selection of tsukemono(pickled dishes) that they bring to you in the beginning.

CHINESE
I love Gyoza (chinese dumplings) and fried rice. I want giant gyoza graff on my kitchen wall!

Okonomiyaki (As You Like Pancake) was originated in Osaka. I couldn't wait to come eat it in it's birthplace. In Osaka, you can get it with noodles, which is extra fatness!
The only thing I don't like is that unlike the chain restaurants like DohTohBori,
where you experience the pleasure of cooking it at your own table.

Osakans don't want you to touch the Okonomiyake and they will cook it for you themselves!

Definitely a tourst destination. I climbed to the 8th floor of the museum and worked my way down and around each floor of exhibitions. The views from the top were the best.

I stayed at the Weekly Mansion in Otemachi. I booked the reservation on hostelworld.com, and was worried about what the room was going be like. I read the reviews, and many people said they were happy with the service and it was more like a hotel not a hostel. All I want is a private room and bathroom when I travel so I booked the private for 2 days and it was cheap.

When I went to check-in, they allowed me to go to the room at 10am when I arrived, instead of the normal 4pm check it. I was exhausted after taking the overnight bus to Osaka, so I really wanted to shower and rest. That was good look, and the room to my surprise was too! There was a small, furnished kitchen area, microwave, nice closet space, and a balcony.

I was satisfied with the location, being 4 blocks away from the Osaka Castle, and 2 blocks from the train station. The staff was very helpful and spoke English and Japanese. I was even able to book the room for an extra night, because I was leaving at 9pm on Sunday and didn't want to check out at 10am. I highly recommend this place if you're on a budget, are too picky about the facility, and are particular about having your own room!

One Night Stand

I’ve lived in Japan for 2 years and I haven’t done it yet.

Sometimes you need a break while running the streets of the city. Maybe you want to read a book, watch a DVD, browse magazines, eat some snacks, chill out, layback, relax and enjoy the cool A.C. in a dimly lit place at anytime of day. This calls for a one-stop rest shop, called kissa or manga kissa, which is an internet/comic café.

I’ve never visited a manga kissa because I can bear to be away from the Internet when I can’t carry my laptop for a day. I never get the urge to watch a DVD or stop to read a book during my run around the city. I prefer to rest and eat food at restaurants and cafes. The only reason I would visit a manga kissa is to check out the shower I’ve heard about, and to learn how to use their facilities in general. Being a germo-phobe, I couldn’t imagine taking a shower in an Internet café. I had to find out for myself.

There are times when my days consist of being awake from 24 to 36 hours with few opportunities to return home to fully recover. After working 8-4m, I may run home to change and head back to the train station to meet up with friends, hit the club, or attend meetings and events. In between, I may crash at a friend’s place, or visit an onsen spa. Sometimes my friends aren’t available, hotels aren’t practical for a short visit and are expensive, and the inconvenient location and communal atmosphere of a hostel isn’t always attractive. Just in case my plans don’t workout, I need to use the convenient services of a manga kissa.

I decided to try on e out when I had to pull an all nighter at a club event on the weekday with my friend. I dropped my suit off for the next day at work. I came home after work to shower, change and grab my overnight bag. I knew sleep was going to be nearly impossible before the next morning, besides catching a nap on the train. We clubbed from 11am until 3am and went to eat. The trains wouldn’t start running again until 5am, so we went to an Internet café to rest and refresh.

The front desk menu was in English and Japanese. The fees ranged from ¥800 ($8) to ¥1,500 ($15) for a block of hours of usage. The price included all you ca drink, non-alcohol, beverage bar, and access to DVDs, magazines, books, and Internet. There were individual computer cubicles with reclining chairs to rest in. Blanket and slippers are available for use fee of charge. The showers cost ¥500 ($5) for 20 minutes, and ¥700 ($7) for 30 minutes, towel included. Soap and shampoo kits could be purchased for an extra ¥300 ($3). I picked up the key at the front desk when the shower became available.

The shower room was like a small bathroom without a toilet. There was a sink, mirror, clothes hanger corner, wastebasket, weight scale, and counter with a towel, and disposable cup and toothbrush. The shower was very clean, with only enough standing room and small ledge for sitting. I hurried and unloaded all of my toiletries, shower shoes, slippers, and washcloth, in a fast attempt to make my 20-minute limit.

Overall I felt so fresh and so clean, and satisfied I finally experienced a manga kissa for myself. Although I didn’t get to nap in my computer cubicle chair, I made the most of my one night stand.

African Drummer Latyr Sy Beats Japan Down

African percussionist and Senegal Native Latyr Sy has been drumming in Japan for the past 5 years. He brought his beats to the United Colors of Benetton fall/winter 2008 fashion show to support Benetton's "Africa Works" campaign. Latyr said he began drumming as a child in Senegal because it was something he had picked up and liked to do. His love and skill for drumming grew into a career that has brought Africa's beat around the world to places like France, Korea, China, Germany, Egypt, and Japan where he resides.

Being a percussionist isn't something Sy set out to be. He plays because he loves the music and hopes to induce happiness and a feeling of festivity in all who hears his music. African music and culture being spread around the world and Japan is one of his goals. His percussionist group has members from multiple countries in Africa besides Senegal. Working with Benetton who promotes projects like Birima's micro-credit Program in Senegal which fosters economic stimulus, education, and productive small businesses, can do more to help develop African nations than political involvement can, Sy feels. Events like the fall/winter 2008 United Colors of Benetton fashion show helps to promote awareness and culture to the masses.

Latyr Sy uses his talent throughout Japan by conducting live performances, TV appearances, band recordings, and collaborating with musicians in various genres from Jazz and Latin, to Folk and Rock. He teaches African Drumming and holds workshops to further encourage interests on a national level, from elementary school and above. When people hear his name and his music, Sy wants them to be happy and let out what they feel on the inside as the beat of the drum moves them.

Memorial Dai-You Know How We Do!

Memorial Dai is the American National Holiday to honor soldiers and veterans of the United States Armed Services. It more commonly is observed on the last Mondai of the month of May, making a 3-day weekend for many workers and students. Memorial Dai is used as a National BBQ dai and the official start of summer at most households. Many families have picnics, cookouts, and travel to visit family along with the grave sites of those honored fallen soldiers.

Living in Japan and unaffiliated with American services, I can easily forget American Holidais. Many of my friends won’t have off when I’m observing Japanese holidais, and I don’t get the long weekends when they do. It just so happens this year I had off on the observed Memorial Dai.

I was blessed to be able to attend a BBQ and inhale one of the most delicious scents on Earth: char-grilled meat and barbeque sauce. I sat right next to the grill while my homie CJ hooked up the chicken just right with the good brunt on it. The Japanese don’t like the burnt and think it’s cooked wrong. Little do they know that is a part of the recipe.

I ate the sweetest watermelon slices ever. We might as well consider watermelon a delicacy being that they can cost $10-$20 each, just for the small ones. We drank and ate ourselves full under a warm Japan sun and cool breeze. In true Black American BBQ fashion, we broke out a deck of cards and played Spades. You’d be amazed that most of us hadn’t played in 2 to 4 years. No African American BBQ is complete without some sort of games like Uno, Dominoes, Badminton, or Horseshoes.

Being in Japan really makes me miss and appreciate my culture more. Things we consider stereotypes with negative connotations, I realize are really a true factor and positively embraceable. Japan gives our chicken and watermelon love a tough tie. There is nothing wrong with that. Besides, like Dave Chappelle said, “show me all these people who hate chicken and watermelon!” No matter where we go, that’s where we at! Some things still feel like home. I had a happy Memorial Dai!

"One Love" Jamaica Festival

Hundreds turned out to pack Yoyogi Park to share one love for Jamaican-Japan relations. Japan has a deep-rooted following of all things from Jamaican Culture including music, food, dance, and the number 1 import coffee. The park was filled with informational booths and stands selling jerk chicken, Red Stripe beer, Meyers Jamaican Rum, and clothing colored in flags of green, black, yellow, and red. The 2-day festival celebrated the relationship between Japan and Jamaica. The Jamaican Embassy and friendship groups had stands to promote educational facts about, the country. There were Dancehall lessons, and Patwa, Jamaican English dialect, lessons. Many J-Reggae artists performed on the concert stage including a special performance by the 2 time winning Jamaican Dancehall Queen, who is a Japan native, Junko. All nationalities were present to take part in the cultural festivities, and to show One Love for Jamaica in Japan.

Even the babies of the world love the Roc!

Springroove 2008, Tokyo's Largest Hip Hop and R&B concert fest. This year the headliners were Rihanna and Neyo with a Bape Heads Show Stage which featured Kanye West, N.E.R.D, and Teriyaki Boyz. I went just in time for my personal headliners NERD and Kanye. They did an hour set each and rocked it! I stayed in the BAPE Stage room and didn't bother to see Rihanna and I'm not a Neyo fan.

NERD did a variety of their tracks including "Brain", "Fly or Die", "Rockstar", "Lap Dance", "Maybe", and their latest single "Everybody Nose". The crowd was difficult at reacting besides us die hard NERD fans and the various people who had their select favorite singles. Pharrell kept going down the stage with his silly kicking dance. The band rocked it and I loved their drummers and guitarists.

Kanye West, Kanyeably late, started a half an hour past when he was supposed to go on. He is a great performer and puts his all in his shows. I kept bustin on his serious gaze into the camera, he's so dramatic. I love him! He performed everything I wanted to hear from "Good Morning", "Homecoming", "Gold Digger", "Champion", "Through the Wire", "Get Em High", "Good Life", "Heard Em Say", "Can't Tell Me Nothing", "Jesus Walks", "Touch The Sky", "Flashing Lights" and many more. I was done when he did my favorite from this year, "I Wonder". He even got on his Alicia Keys when he went to the keyboard for his own "I Wonder" playing medley. I will cry if he doesn't come back with his Glow In The Dark Tour. I highly suggest everyone go to that!

At the end of the show, Teriyaki Boyz took the stage with DJ Nigo (creator of Bathing Ape) to perform their Pharrell and Kanye collaboration tracks. They did their newest single "Zock On" which features Pharrell and Busta Rhymes. Then they performed with Kanye to "I Still Love H.E.R.", and Pharrel closed out with "Number 1".

This was a great show for Kanye and N.E.R.D. to not have been headliners. I went just to see them and was not disappointed!

This man was posted up on the corner of Harajuku Station and Yoyogi Park, selling these pancake balls. My friend bought some and insisted I try them. At first I thought they needed syrup poured over them, but they were just sweet enough to be delicious and addicting. I had to go back and order another bag of 20 for $5. Once you pop you can't stop said Pringles, but that is the truth about these! The pancake version of pretzel bites. Fatness First!

I'm always scouting the best bathrooms, to change clothes in, around Tokyo. If leaving from work, and planning on staying out all night or attending events where you can't get home to change, it is always good to know where to go. Most of the women here tote huge purses, rolling suitcases, and shopping bags . It's unfortunate to come across a bathroom stall without enough room for you to turn around in, or even fit your baggage. But there are locations made just right for the occassion of changing clothes, and doing hair and makeup when you don't need a hotel room or public bath.

The entrance to the bathroom on the 12th floor of the Takashimaya Times Square department store, South exit of shinjuku station, has a great view of the station and surrounding.

The bathrooms are large enough for a suitcase and there's a wall shelf for other items.

The stalls come equipped with a toilet seat disinfectant dispenser, heated seats, water sprayer, air freshener, and flush sound effects for the whole Japanese hi-tech toilet experience. Instructions are available in English!

There is no need to use the regular sinks to wash and re-apply makeup.

There is a separate section/powder room with chairs, mirrors, basins, and a full length mirror, just for getting yourself done up. All while over looking Shinjuku.

My New Apartment

I've lived in Tochigi for the past 2 years. I'm finally moving to the Tokyo area so I can get it crackin' in close proximity to everything!

I was concerned with my pack-rat like tendencies and how I was going to move all of my stuff from Tochigi to Tokyo. I used a UPS like courier called Kuro Neko Yamato (Black Cat Yamato), to transport my boxes. They came to assess the size and amount of my boxes a week before I moved.

I paid for a crate portion in their moving truck, and they planned a date, arrived and took all of my stuff out, held it at storage near where I was moving, then delivered it on my move in date. It wasn't expensive, but then again, I didn't have any real furniture to move.

My new apartment was semi-furnished, meaning included a fridge, washing machine, microwave, tv and tv stand, and a bed frame. I had to buy a 2 stove top gas range and a conventional oven. My apartment sized is a 2DK, meaning 2 rooms and a dining room/kitchen area.

The apartment came with this terrible bed frame and nothing else to put on it. They wouldn't keep it, and I was stuck with this frame taking up space, and I don't care to sleep this low to the floor. I had to find a sofa bed to cover it.

I live on the first floor, which I prefer, but this carpet all over-including the kitchen is not good, considering I always spill stuff. I'll see how long this lasts!
